    Default Core E8500 VS Core i5 650

    Hi

If I upgrade from a Core Duo E8500 to a Core i5 650 will I notice a performance gain?

    Processor
    http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/in...hz-p-3853.html
    Ram: 2x2GB 1600Mhz
    http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/co...00-p-3521.html
    Motherboard: MSI
    http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/p5...et-p-3718.html

Needing a Thermalright Core i5 cooler (suggestions as well)

I upgraded to 4GB of OCZ (2x2GB) not to long ago & noticed a definate load speed increase. I can still generally play all the current titles out there with my current rig but I also want to help Trinity upgrade her rig (AMD 3400, DDR400 (512MB I think), Geforce 6200GT)

Don't have a huge budget as it's an upgrade to help Trinity.

P.s Thanks to Landmarkpc for the links.

Hardly. Check the specs here: http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?ids=43546,33911

Core i5 processors are Core 2 Duo's in disguise, not quads. And they use DDR3 which is an expensive board + RAM upgrade. Not a big enough jump IMHO.

Rather upgrade your graphics card. Your E8500 is still a gem chip.

*Edit* I missed the part about upgrading Trinity's rig. So your E8500 would go to her? If that is the case, it's a very small upgrade for you but a huge upgrade for her. At least the Core i5 won't cost you an arm and a leg - real value processors and high speed.

This is a kinda 2 sided sword. While quite a few new games can use all cores, not all of them do...yet. With DX11 games, they can use all cores so now would be a good start to move to a quad.

Apart from that, upgrading trinities PC would be an awesome enough reason on its own

Those parts you chose are solid, but may I ask, why thermalright?

It is not a quad. It is a Core 2 Duo with Hyper Threading and Turbo Boost support.

You are correctus, I was thinking of this
    http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/in...hz-p-3362.html

    Not even R200 more.

Seeing as you will be getting a better cooler you can just overclock it to 3.2ghz

Thanks dude! i know the E8500 is a sweet chip.

So what about getting a cheap LGA775 board & Processor for Trinity instead?

    Any recommondations on that?

@ Bradley: I have a Thermalright 90 cooler & it works wonders. Razer had a Thermalright 120 on his E8400 & E8600. The cooler workers like a bomb.

If you are looking at a cooler, just look at some of the Cogage products.

The Arrow is on par with ThermalRight 120, but almost half the price.

Thanks Pollynator! I would think harder if I was going Core i5.

    Nice clean site wootware

The Nvidia 400 series is coming out soon so I'm thinking of upgrading to that card in July/Aug when it's a bit cheaper.

Perhaps it would make sense to stay with LGA775 for Trinity and keep your E8500/board/new RAM. It will be far cheaper. I am sure she doesn't need anything like your rig so perhaps get her a light rig but decent graphics.

Yeah go with 775 rather, I would get the E6300, its a very decent CPU for the price, if its too expensive though, then get the E5300, nothing wrong with it! For a board I would suggest a Gigabyte G31 board, good performance and very cheap. As for a card you cant go wrong with a 5770.

Edit, as for coolers, you cant go wrong with Cogage! Even the cheaper True Spirit kicks serious behind!
