    Default Is my Harddrive Dying?

    Hey dudes.

I been noticing some strange stuff with my Western Digital 750Gb recently. I am running my OS and have a lot my important data on this drive but it has been acting really weird and want to know if I should start looking at backing it up and replacing it.

Here is the HDTune graph. You can see some seriously hectic access times and some super bad read writes and you can see how erratic the drive is behaving.

Here is the Health Panel, there is a warning on the drive now.

I have began backing some of my stuff to my other drives.

Is the drive on its way out. I am not sure about warranty around these things, SLick maybe you can feedback on this?

Tried swapping cables and SATA port on the motherboard but no joy, still has a warning.

Yup, if your drive is giving your SMART errors, it should be eligible for return and replacement if it's still in the warranty period (which it still should be).

EDIT: This particular error is a bit trickier to diagnose. Check here: http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives...ror-count.html

Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is a method of verifying and correcting data after it is sent. What this warning is telling you is that at one point, data being sent/received by the drive failed this check. The most common cause for this is a faulty cable. Noise or resistence caused a bit to be flipped.

It already occurred so switch cables won't reset the SMART log. You just need to watch for additional errors.

I believe in this golden rule when it comes to hard drives : If in doubt, chuck it out !
The cost involved in replacing a hard drive in good time is negligible compared to the cost of not doing so.

    C'mon, Polly - you know you want a new 2TB drive !

Hehe Rock.. I am actually good for space. I was considering going for an SSD and a 2TB.

Currently my HDD situation sits as follows:
    1x750Gb WD
    1x1Tb Samsung
    1x1.5Tb WD

So I reckon a 2TB as a replacement would do nicely

Agreed with Rock. If you have any doubts just get the drive swapped. That error is reason enough to proceed.

Well I have already backed up data off the drive as I don't feel like taking chances. I think that an SSD will be a nice addition to my rig as well as a drive to load my new OS on as I will have to remove my current OS drive.

Ratwiz is getting some sexy SSD's in June so I will probably wait until them. I think I will settling with a 120Gb model as the 250Gb's are still rather pricey.
