When one buys a PC it is usually perfect for one's current requirements. Plenty of processing power, lots of RAM and a monitor that can be used with future generations of machines (and probably outlast them).
The one component that takes a severe hammering is the hard drive (mechanical in part) and is fairly quickly overloaded with games, internet downloads and anime collections. For this reason, it is quite common for people who are still quite happy with their computers to run into disk space limitations well before the computer is due for replacement.
PCSTATS offers an enormous amount of 'How to' guides, and not surprisingly addresses the very popular 'I need more disk space' problem. Both IDE and SATA drives are covered in this guide (which is exceptionally well written) :

You can read this guide even if you are just remotely interested in finding out about the differences between IDE and SATA.
