Going on a holiday to a tropical island resort, you have made plans to get drunk at clubs, meet beach babes, and swim in the sea and look at the incredible vista but plans don’t work out as you would expect. After a heavy night of drinking and partying in a club, you get awoken by an emergency intercom to evacuate the premises only to find out later that the whole island is infected with a disease that turn people into, yup you guessed it, zombies!

GAMEPLAY

The game is in first person and is an RPG that allows your character to level up and choose perks to make your character unique and strong. To start off, you get to choose between 4 characters from a soccer star to an Asian hotel clerk, they all specialize in something such as a melee pro or a gun fighter. Every time your character levels up, you get to choose a perk and you can use your perks to specialize in fury, combat or survival. If you choose the combat tree, you can make your kicks very deadly.

The best thing about Dead Island, it offers gruesome zombie pounding, you can smash zombies heads with your fists and give a few flying kicks to send them into the air. The amounts of weapons you get are plentiful though majorities are melee weapons from paddling sticks to homemade machetes, they also deteriorate pretty fast but no worries, you can choose a perk to help the deterioration slow down by up to 15%. There is also a weapon customization system which you can give fire or electric damage to your melee weapons. I was expecting to find a pistol in the beginning of the game but sadly it is as hard as finding a needle in a haystack to find  a handgun, let me say again, to find a handgun not a machine gun or AK, a handgun.

Fighting zombies can get difficult especially if you fighting them in groups. You get a few types of zombies from thugs to walkers, though be warned of the runners, they run straight into your face that make you hit that shift button so quick and get a fright while doing so. Thugs on the other hand are these tough guy zombies, who you can hear them scream in a distance, “WTF was that?” would be your first reaction.

Dead Island will keep you busy for awhile. There are dozens of side quests to do and when you complete a quest you get rewarded though the best rewards are when you explore and best is to do it in a car, since you can find lots of money, items and weapons that will aid you in the game. You can also create weapons like a baseball bat with spikes and so on. Even though you get all these cool weapons and perks, don’t be thinking you can run into an area like Rambo and start killing off multiple zombies because honestly you cannot, you will die at least 3 times while playing Dead Island. The game isn’t extremely difficult but you do get challenging parts, it makes you focus on survival.

CO-OP

The awesome thing about Dead Island is that 3 of your friends can join you in decapitating them zombie bastards as it offers a 4 player co-op. So when you trying to do those challenging parts, you can always ask a friend to aid you in battle.

STORYLINE

The story isn’t something out of a horror movie and it isn’t very entertaining either. The story unfolds as you progress but is very bland. You’re on a island that gets infected with a disease and you out of 4 characters can resist the infection, so you have to be the hero and fight your way to save the people and find out how the infection happened.

GRAPHICS

The graphics aren’t comparable to Battlefield 3 but they are good and the way zombies react to the environment is realistic. There were a few bugs here and there where zombies would pop out a wall but the game is still visually good and playable.

CONCLUSION

Playing in first person while killing off zombies that make sounds you have never heard before and trying to survive on an island full of zombies gives the player a vivid experience but you won’t be playing it for days.

My review? 1/10. Why? We splashed out like 600 bucks when it landed....and co-op still doesn't work. What you get as a paying gamer...contempt.

Did you actually try co-op????

Nope I did not try the co-op that is why I did not write much about it. And if it does not work, don't you think the company who made it would roll out a patch to fix it? Have you searched for a patch yet?:O

Another reason why PC is and will always be better then consoles is because we don't pay 600 instead 300-400 or you can save your money and download a cracked version if your desperate:foot-in-mouth:, though I don't recommend it.

For a zombie game it's good. Find me a better zombie game to date that can match it besides Black Ops.:P

Depending on your level of bravery, you might want to Google & use the Co-Op fix.

1 Year later and today we tried to co-op Dead Island again....and it worked flawlessly.  We played the entire day and I enjoyed the game immensely.  Funny how I could play this for a whole day and yet when Borderlands 2 released, it just didn't gel for me.

Tabera and I will be playing this for several more weekends for sure!

Revised rating is 7.5/10.

We have been playing Dead Island for about 4 days straight now. Some other games in between, but man it's great fun! We started out as 4, but just 3 of us ended up jamming it. It's not bad playing alone, a bit better with 2. But when you can play with 3 or 4 it just gets beyond next level. Really loving the game! Honestly though, the game only picks up from Act 2. I was quite bored in Act 1, not so keen. Just played because of the LAN. Hit Act 2 and the higher levels. Game changer!

Leaving Ionflux's house today though. :(

Another epic whole day spent on Dead Island. With the side quests this game is loooong. We're on Act 2 now and terrorizing every zombie bull we can. Enter the quarantined areas at your own risk. Not recommended!

And, has your rating of 7.5 climbed a bit since you hit Act 2? :P We literally hit every single side quest there is to do. I think we missed one in Act 1. So nice to do them all!

Man, I really want to finish the game badly. Guess I'll have to play it over the internet, since it will be ages again before I LAN again.
