On April 8, 2014, security patches and hotfixes for all versions of Windows XP will no longer be available. This means that, after this date, PCs running Windows XP will be vulnerable to security threats. In addition, many third party software providers are not planning to extend support for their applications running on Windows XP, which translates to even more complexity, risk, and ultimately, added management cost for your IT department if you are still managing Windows XP environments.

The average operating system deployment project takes 18-24 months. Start your migration today with valuable step-by-step guides and other tools to help you migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7.

I was hoping the title would say: "IE end of support: ASAP."

Yeah, IE still sucks. Working on our site and everything works perfectly on Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari and just about all Gecko and Webkit variations. But we have some rendering issues with IE8 which IE9 fixes but IE9 introduces other problems which worked in IE8... in fact it seems to be worse than IE8 in some regards, aaauurgh!!! I just wish Microsoft wil stop trying to make browsers already.

There are still millions of PCs running XP out there, I'm afraid. Businesses are the worst offenders with their "But it works fine, see? Look!" attitude. (I even saw one with an ancient relic of a computer running Ye Olde Windows 98 the other day. It gave me the creeps.) Unfortunately Windows XP has been around so long that big complex software systems that have been designed around it are now inixtricably linked to it. Changing the OS after so many years changes EVERYTHING, requiring a complete redesign of the whole thing. So then they just keep running the old OS......

Long story short: Upgrading fairly regularly is a good thing.

And yes, IE sucks.

Upgrading costs money.  Why spend money if what you need to do is indeed met by what you are currently running?  The easiest way to keep a business profitable is minimising your costs, and if you need to spend, rather invest in the things that really matter, like the quality of your staff.

Exactly right Recho.   Businesses don't buy anything unless it adds to their bottom line profit.

Ditto computers/software. That is one of the reason MS offers "Software Assurance"  as a means to facilitate buy into future products.
