Razer : I've just run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant and the end result was better than expected:
Mmmm ... that Excel viewer incompatibility is surely an attempt by Micro$oft to get you to buy their Office Suite but  I suppose you could always use Google docs (or similar) to read new format spreadsheets.
Apart from that it all seems good !

Think I am going to purchase online and download the .iso as it works out to like R360 that way.

Regards the Excel viewer, AFAIK it's the '97 viewer so really is legacy...they never brought out a "2010" viewer. Besides, Office 2013 is gonna be like Windows 8 and does come as a preview when you install. Yikes, hardly had time to get used to all the changes in Office 2010 now 2013 is here!

I have an Excel viewer installed that can handle the 2010 .XLSX files but it shouldn't be a deal breaker when deciding to move to Win 8 (I have Office 2010 installed on my XP rig if it becomes an issue). Mmmm ... now I'm wondering ... should I upgrade my XP rig to 7 if I move from 7 to 8 ? Nah .. stuff it ! I'll stick with what I have for a while longer. :silly:

Razer's [and Rockspider's] Excel Viewer should be the 2007 version [ http://www.microsoft...ails.aspx?id=10 ], as it's the same version as that of the office 2007 compatibility pack [v.12.0.6612.1000].. So it should allow one to view .xlsx files...
I doubt it would be a real issue in desktop mode/view... but could be irksome if one uses a touch-screen/tablet...

Upgrade & let us know...

As for possible solutions if it really fails, like many have said, just install the trail version of Office until Office 2013 get released... or LibreOffice...

Well, it's much easier to get used to as a tablet OS than for a desktop... Some of my app's, like VMWare vSphere Client, need to be installed in Windows 7 compatibility mode, but they run fine.
One thing is that Metro doesn't span across all monitors -- not a biggy, but with a resolution like mine, it would've been nice if it could.  The window boarders & titles seem very KDE 3.5; which is just different for Windows and found myself sometimes hitting Alt+F1 & Alt+F2 at the begining.
I think metro has real potential; would like to see it more developed withthings like layers [like app-draws/folders], etc. but that should come in time with the appStore offerings.

All in all, it's stable & smooth... but not a must have if you're coming from Win7.  From WinXP/Vista, it's a must have if you consider the upgrade offering price.

And this my friends is why I lovingly refer to them as MicroShaft (Directx 11.1 - Windows 8 Exclusive):

@Recho: that is pretty scaley of M$ indeed.  I hope they don't pull a similar thing with Office 2013!

Alright, so I popped in the new 64GB RAM & RAID 0 SSD pair, and installed windows 8 again a few minutes ago... however now I'm unable to change my background or even complete the windows assessment [err.msg after the DX 3D 10 test: "could not measure video playback performance"]
WTF!!!

I'm still recovering from my first encounter with Windows 8. Someone sent me a laptop to configure and install some stuff. Innocently I powered it up and my virtual wheels all got punctured. Is the interface (without anything really useful on it - like a start button) supposed to be a joke ? Could it be that one of the perks of working at Microsoft is getting issued free LSD ? The angels weep.

This interface does not seem to dumb down only the PC but the user as well. Goddam cell phone generation. A quick look 'round the internet and I discovered that I am not alone in my reaction to this rather exotically useless interface but that many thousands of people imitated venus flytraps when being accosted by the latest and greatest from Micro$oft. There are a number of improvements already written (some free) to make the desktop and task bar a little more sensible - I would definitely have to use one of them should I go over to Win8.

My Win7 theme makes my desktop look like Win XP ... the best I can hope for is that I will be able to make Win 8 look like Win 7.
Clicking on MAIL to see what was on offer, I had a helluva time getting out of the full screen that wanted me to sign up with Microsoft. Cancel does not do it and there is no Exit, Quit or Close option on display. I can only wonder how many calls I will be getting in future from customers who will be equally lost. Maybe it's time that I started doing drugs too just to keep up with the world wide insanity that prevails in all areas of life.

Hopefully my next encounter with Win8 will go a little more smoothly than this - I will be reading up plenty before then.

Well, VF will surely piss in his pants but I'm likely to go over to OS X Mountain Lion for non gaming duties soon.

I installed our very first Win 8 machine yesterday, during install it bombed out and had to restart, no biggy, its a PC from HP so it comes with a modified install and prolly get fixed soon as its rather fresh out. Restarting the install fixed it.

The last couple of years, I've tried to stop from being judging anything too soon, but Win 8 just seems to radical a change. I'm not trying to sound high and mighty but the vast majority of users still click on "You have won $4000000 bajilion dollers" or "free animal pron" and get infected or if the icon isnt on their desktop, the app isnt installed. My point is, some desktop users get "confused" or struggle to get to grips with an OS, just shutting down Win 8 is a hassle the first couple of times.

Taking away the start menu is plain stupid, I see a tough year ahead teaching ppl to use Win 8.

I think (admin) users in the position that will have to support other (end) users should have Win 8 installed on a separate partition to play around with and get familiar with to be able to assist other users in your company.

I have installed Steam on the Mac but I think the games are a bit limited. I can play CS Source, and portal on it though (OpenGL)

Win 8 is a bit strange to get use too, VF A LOT of MS admins are going to moan at MS for changing the interface. All the:"Why is my mouse not working" users are gonna bug them.

Installed windows 8 enterprise a few days ago, it is the best microsoft operating system to date, windows 7 can shove it :P

It is extremely light compared to win7 and it boots up in an instant, the security has been tramendously improved, no more do I need to use Avast free instead just update my windows defender :D. Everything opens up quicker, navigating it is has become very easy. And the best thing they have added to windows 8 is that you can mount iso's :D without the need of daemon tools. Also the new task manager overhaul was definitely needed, now it can actually help you sort of problems. Driver support is also great, I didn't have to install my canon drivers because windows 8 had the driver built in. So just plug and play :D. However what bothers me is the lack of customization on the start menu, don't get me wrong you can customize it quite a bit however they could have made it better, way better :)
